Cold Formed Steel (CFS) Stud

Surinak Engineering, LLC has been involved in several new build projects that required Specialty Structural Engineer (SSE) design and sign off of CFS, including the development of signed shop drawings. Projects have varied from multi-family, dealerships, schools, and more. For Brownsburg's Lincoln Elementary, Surinak Engineering, LLC provided not only signed steel shop drawings of loadbearing CFS. We also designed CFS shear walls, and provided a full BIM set. We interacted with other trades via computer models to quickly and efficiently address several conflicts before rework was required.

Surinak Engineering, LLC has designed modifications for joists and deck manufactured by all of the major steel joist manufacturers. We are experienced in reverse engineering truss load capacities, as well as designing reinforcement or repairs.

These large features had to handle extremely large wind loads, yet also minimize impact on the existing structures. Surinak Engineering, LLC also analyzed and specified the components and cladding for the structures to ensure the total feature worked as a single unit.

The project above demonstrated the power of wind in an enclosed space. Large straight-line winds from a storm entered the structure through open overhead doors. The resultant overpressure physically bowed a concrete and steel stud wall several inches into an adjacent space and the wall fell back into place after the storm passed. Surinak Engineering, LLC had to use non-destructive methods to determine which elements failed and how to repair the damage.

Construction Inspections

Surinak Engineering, LLC can provide all levels of construction inspections for many different construction types. This example project below was a steel prefab building. The owner was concerned about the quality of the erection process. Surinak Engineering, LLC inspected and identified areas that didn’t comply with the Steel Code of Standard Practice as well as performed analysis and design of owner requested modifications to the structure.

Evaluation and signoff or repair of existing conditions

Michigan International Speedway (MIS) removed several thousand bleachers to expand their trackside RV parking. The removal process required modifications to some of the remaining support structure. MIS required engineering evaluation and signoff that the modifications to the remaining support structure was safe.

Comercial Design

New Build/EOR Services

Surinak Engineering, LLC has commercial Engineer of Record (EOR) experience. This project is a large three story, with future fourth story, multi-use development in Broadripple. This structure is also the flagship for the headquarters for a local architecture firm, and unique features were desired which required some innovative structural designs. The structure is in a flood plain with a four-foot flood zone, and mixes both wet and dry floodproofing approaches. Surinak Engineering, LLC had to analyze for a variety of FEMA required flood loads such as hydrostatic, hydrodynamic, and impact by 1000-pound debris.

Remodel

New Build/EOR Services

Surinak Engineering, LLC filled the role as Designer of Record for this extensive repurposing and remodel of a former church to a classic car storage and restoration facility. This project provided several unique challenges; variance approvals, change of occupancy (Chapter 34 assessment), wellfield protection, as well as the design of new exterior and interior openings, removal of structural columns, and reinforcement of roof joists.

Reverse Engineering/Rebuild

Mechanical Electrical and Plumbing (MEP)

Surinak Engineering, LLC is comfortable handling challenging and unique projects. A local church had a 60-year-old, 2000-pound steeple blow off during a windstorm. Inspection of the debris determined that the failure was due to design details that allowed water to collect on unprotected surfaces. The original drawing set of the steeple was incomplete, Surinak Engineering, LLC reverse engineered the steeple design based on an inspection of the existing steeple, and then incorporated design changes to handle today’s more rigorous code standards. Surinak Engineering, LLC also made changes to design details to prevent water collection and recommended material upgrades to provide better protection. The new steeple matched exactly to the old mounting on the roof, looks great, and will last for more than another 60 years.

Surinak Engineering, LLC has performed MEP design for several remodeling efforts. We are familiar with code requirements as well as the challenges faced during remodeling. Surinak Engineering, LLC can also perform state required COMcheck analysis for energy efficiency of new systems and upgrades.

Some locales require a PE to sign off on deck designs or foundations, and Surinak Engineering, LLC frequently performs these services for a modest fee. The deck example shown was a more complex problem, where the deck was a second story, had to support a large fireplace, and also not impart any loads on the brick veneer of the home.

Custom Remodels

Surinak Engineering, LLC is familiar with the challenges of opening up older homes to provide that new open concept feel. We are familiar with both wood and steel construction, and we understand the cost sensitivities of homeowners. Steel provides a lower profile, but at a cost, however, there are instances where steel is required. For this project the homeowner wanted an extremely long span with a low profile, and the contractor wanted to keep costs down. A multi-ply LVL was selected with proper end bearing to provide the final look the homeowner wanted.

Surinak Engineering frequently handles unique remodels. This homeowner had purchased a hundred-year-old church and wanted to convert it into a home, while maintaining several architectural details from the original structure. This homeowner also wanted to be their own General Contractor, and Surinak Engineering, LLC provided needed advice to assist them through the process.

Surinak Engineering, LLC can also support more standard additions such as this garage expansion. The new garage also included a roof deck for relaxing. Surinak Engineering, LLC handled city required site plans in addition to structural and architectural plans. This homeowner had selected their own general contractor, and Surinak Engineering, LLC worked with the G.C. to ensure the end result met the homeowners' expectations.
